Rewire your own brain!

Gone are the days when being 'stuck in your ways' was a matter of course for anyone over the age of 30. It's now unequivocal - neuroscientists have proven that our brains keep changing (and we can even grow new brain cells) whatever our age. Changing the way you think and the way you relate to other people can profoundly affect the structure of your brain and alter your behaviour and your happiness. Powerful ways to bring this about are:

  • in relationship: your brain resonates with the other person's and you can literally reshape one another's brains

  • in quiet moments, such as meditation. Neuropsychiatrist Dr Dan Seigel calls this 'time in'

  • learning a new skill - a language, an instrument, an exercise routine - is a great way to exercise your brain

There are many ways; but the impact is almost always more powerful when changes are made with another person, in a supportive, caring relationship. For you, this might be a best friend or a partner or parent. Spending time with a therapist, life coach or mentor can also have great results. At Viveka, our range of support includes hypnotherapy, counselling & psychotherapy, life coaching, and courses such as Babiesknow.

I totally agree; every so often I put myself through the motions of learning something new and I'm amazed at how much focus and concentration it takes initially, until I learn it well and eventually it becomes second nature.

I can almost feel my brain cells working whilst I'm in the initial learning stage!

Same with the work I do with my own life coach and with my coaching clients; when the "penny drops", or they have what we call "light bulb moments" I can almost see a person going through a change right before my eyes!

Great blog Harriet, thank you!

I am so pleased to have been introduced to Dans work through Viveka. I am reading his book Mindsight which is about the plasticity of the brain and how we can change deep seated patterns in our behaviour. I agree with Natalie it requires a deep commitment to make the first steps but the hard work really pays off. I have noticed that some clients who come to homeopathy are already poised on that threshold of change, they have been reflective or having "time in"to use Dans words and perhaps the homeopathic remedies just help faciltiate a shift that is already in process.
