Over the past 40 years there has been a dramatic rise in the number of people suffering from asthma, eczema, hayfever and food allergies. This ‘allergy epidemic’ has affected children in particular, with a recent survey suggesting that almost 40% of UK children suffer from an allergic disease.
In infancy, allergy may become apparent in the form of eczema, wheeze or reactions to food. However, sometimes allergy can present subtly and underlie otherwise common childhood symptoms such as reflux, colic, diarrhoea or poor growth.
Unfortunately, it can be difficult to get expert medical help for childhood allergy since there are very few Paediatric Allergy specialists in the UK in the UK (unlike in the United States and much of Europe). Having a Paediatric Allergist at Viveka gives you acces to one of the UK's leading allergy doctors. Dr Adam Fox is one of the UK’s few specialist Paediatric Allergists and has extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of allergic disease in babies. He is experienced in using a comprehensive range of the most up to date diagnostic tests and treatments available. Adam is supported by a paediatric Dietitian and a paediatric allergy nurse.
Children often suffer from more than one allergic condition such as asthma, eczema food allergy and allergic rhinitis. We aim to treat all of our patients holistically, rather than treating each different problem in isolation.
At Viveka you may also wish to visit a complementary therapist or talk to a nutritionist about your diet if you are breastfeeding, or your baby's diet if he or she is weaned. Family and emotional support from a counsellor or family therapist or another member of our 'Emo' team may be invaluable if the allergy is impacting on your family life.
