Ear, nose, throat (ENT)
Ear pain and infection are common among babies, and can often be treated effectively using gentle complementary therapies. The same applies to blocked noses and persistent snot. Occasionally referral to a paediatrician is useful.
We'll work with you, providing the level of support that suits your baby, for issues ranging from ear infection with discharge and blockages, to snotty noses, enlarged adenoids, blocked or noisy breathing, sleep apnoea, recurrent sore throats and hearing problems.
A paediatric examination is an important starting point. We will stay in touch with your doctor or paediatrician during the process of diagnosis and treatment.
Most diagnostic testing can be done in the consulting room. Laboratory tests may be needed, e.g. to confirm an ear infection (such as acute otitis media or externa, or glue ear). Allergy tests may be recommended if the paediatrican feels they could be useful.
Medical treatment may be necessary, for instance to combat infection. For blocked ears, the paediatrician may use microsuction to remove excess wax.
Surgical treatment is sometimes needed, although it is usually delayed. A small number of children benefit from the use of grommets, which can be easily fitted and monitored. When constant nasal discharge is an issue, an adenoidectomy (removal of the glands at the back of the nose) may be very effective.
Complementary therapies are often used in conjunction with paediatric treatment. It is common for families to work closely with homeopaths or nutritional therapists. In our experience, acupuncture (or acupressure) and osteopathy can bring positive results. Your specialist will guide you.
Did you know?
The large majority of childhood cases of 'glue-ear' do not lead to long term problems, and usually clear up of their own accord. While antibiotics may sometimes be useful and regular medical observation is important, it is interesting that many babies also respond well to homeopathy and to nutritional changes, either in their diet, or in mum's diet if they are breastfeeding.
