Feeding & digestion

At Viveka a specialist paediatric gastroenterologist is joined by general paediatricians, family therapists, nutritionists and complementary therapists. They understand the ins and outs of baby poo and the range of tummy pains and digestive disorders.

Digestive disorders are common in babies and usually respond to simple measures. Our children's team provides practical advice that is usually effective. We thoroughly investigate and gently treat of problems ranging from tummy pains and reflux to constipation, diarrhoea and food intolerance. We'll work with you and your baby.

A consultant paediatrician may be your primary supporter, providing assessment and a thorough examination. He may recommend referral and/or diagnostic tests.

Our paediatric gastroenterology consultant Neil Shah is available if your baby requires specialist attention.

Our paediatric allergist Adam Fox may help to exclude or identify intolerance (e.g. lactose intolerance) or allergy.

Colic is a term referring to prolongued crying and apparent pain, often in the afternoon/evening. Opinion is divided on the causes of colic, and even on its existence. Your doctor will treat your baby as an individual and make a careful diagnosis that helps to address your unique case. Reflux is often related to a baby spending long periods on the back; it is one of the most common digestive issues.

Medical treatment may occasionally involve medication, e.g. to relieve gastro-oesophageal reflux or constipation.

Surgery may very rarely be needed, for instance to correct intestinal/bowel obstruction or pyloric stenosis.

Our midwife and family therapist is also a breastfeeding consultant who can assist if you are having difficulties around breastfeeding or bottle feeding. Ann is here to help you achieve optimal positioning, and give practical advice on easing your baby's digestion and maintaining a strong milk supply.

Our nutritionists support breastfeeding mothers and advise families on appropriate food for older babies and toddlers. If an allergy or intolerance has been identified, you may visit a nutritionist in addition to a paediatric allergy specialist.

Complementary therapies can assist digestion. Cranial osteopathy, for instance, may release muscle tension and improve bowel function and reflux; and homeopathy may be very effective.

Massage has been used across the world for thousands of years to aid digestion and relieve colic. Soothing and developmental baby massage is taught in regular weekly classes by Karen Eichorn, while Ann Herreboudt, our midwife and family therapist also hosts feeding, sleeping and crying support groups.

Emotional support is often very powerful. Babies often experience a relief from constipation or pain when emotional issues are resolved, and this may include mum's emotions, or resolving tension in the home or between the parents. Our paediatricians are skilled at spotting a link between emotions and physical symptoms, and you may wish to meet one of  Viveka's 'Emo' team. Your baby is welcome to join the consultations or the support groups and we work closely with your paediatrician.
