Allergy
At Viveka your child has access to one of the country's leading paediatric allergy consultants. We offer the latest medical diagnosis and treatment including desensitisation.
Over the past 40 years there has been a dramatic rise in the number of people suffering from asthma, eczema, hayfever and food allergies. This ‘allergy epidemic’ has affected children in particular, with a recent survey suggesting that almost 40% of UK children suffer from an allergic disease.
In childhood, allergy may become apparent in the form of eczema, wheeze or reactions to food. However, sometimes allergy can present subtly and underlie otherwise common childhood symptoms such as reflux, colic, diarrhoea or poor growth. Over time, children may start to outgrow one allergy but may develop others.
Unfortunately, it can be difficult to get expert medical help for childhood allergies, since there are very few paediatric Allergy Specialists in the UK (unlike the United States and much of Europe). At Viveka, however, you have access to one of the country's leading Paediatric Allergy consultants. Dr Adam Fox is here to advise you if you are concerned about allergy in your child, a family history, or worrying symptoms. Dr Fox has extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of allergic disease and has a comprehensive range of the most up to date diagnostic tests and treatments available.
Children often suffer from more than one allergic condition, such as asthma, eczema food allergy and allergic rhinitis. We aim to treat all of our patients holistically, rather than treating each different problem in isolation.
Where allergy or intolerance are causing gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhoea or reflux, Dr Fox works closely with our GI (gastrointestinal) specialist, Dr Neil Shah . This joint service is only otherwise available in highly specialist NHS teaching hospitals.
Viveka's emotional support ('Emo team' ) has a long experience of helping children and families and you are welcome to consult one of the specialists as an individual parent, or as a family, if you would like advice and support. You may also wish to use one or more of the complementary therapies available on site.
Did you know?
Sublingual desensitisation is now available to treat troublesome allergies to grass and tree pollens (the cause of hayfever) as well as to dust mites, pets and horses. This scientifically proven technique is safe and widely used throughout Europe but currently only available in the UK in specialist allergy centres. Find out more in our Allergy Special newsletter.
