Behaviour

If you are concerned about your child's behaviour we know you'll want sensitive and trusted guidance and support. Our specialists in child development and psychology have worked for many years with children of all ages experiencing a huge range of behavioural issues - from tantrums, screaming, hitting, biting and head banging to being withdrawn or having social difficulties with peer groups.

We are careful to offer a child-centred approach as well as considering wider family issues; we often work with parents on their own as well as with the family unit.

We recommend you visit your doctor, or we can refer you to a trusted paediatrician. Medical opinion will help you measure your child's behaviour against his or her developmental stage and check for any underlying physical issues that may contribute to a behavioural issue. Occasionally, allergy plays a role - our consultant allergist is highly skilled at diagnosing allergy and intolerance, which can significantly impact a child's behaviour and may put strain on family relationships.

If a physical condition is suspected or diagnosed, your child may benefit from seeing a specialist consultant, e.g. a doctor experienced in working with children and families affected by autism, ADD or ADHD. Tests will be individually recommended for your child under guidance of your paediatrician. Medical treatment often encompasses lifestyle advice, and occasionally medication may be useful. We recommend specialist help if it is appropriate.

Emotional support may be one of the keys. You may want to visit Ann, our psychologist; Kitty, our psychotherapist; or Carole, our hypnotherapist. If behaviour at school is a problem or there are learning difficulties, you may visit our Educational Psychotherapist. Support will be uniquely tailored to you child and your family. Viveka also hosts a postnatal mums and babies group and support groups for toddlers

Complementary therapy may be very helpful. For instance, many children respond to cranial osteopathy or homeopathy. Looking at your child's eating pattern and using practical nutritional advice may be very effective - one of our nutritionists may help you make lasting changes.
