Hearing difficulties & glue ear

Ear infections (glue ear, otitis media) are common reasons for parents to bring their children to us. We will help you receive a thorough diagnosis. Most apparent problems resolve naturally; only a small number of children require medical treatment, and even fewer need surgery.

We recommend an initial visit to a paediatrician or your GP, and further specialist tests if your doctor advises this. We have strong links with paediatricians specialising in ear health and hearing, if you would like a recommendation. Diagnostic techniques include audiometry, otoscopy and tympanometry to assess hearing abilities, and clinical exams to deduce the extent and severity of ear infections.

Medical treatment with antibiotics may be useful, although most infections clear up on their own. Surgical treatment is rarely necessary. Ocassionally the insertion of grommets is useful.

Complementary therapies frequently prove effective in treating ear problems. For instance, homeopathy and cranial osteopathy often provide relief for children who have experienced recurrent infections. Our nutritionists are expert in reducing some symptoms and probiotics are beneficial when antibiotics are needed.

Emotional support can be helpful, particularly if hearing difficulties have hampered communication in the early years. The therapists in our 'Emo' team are highly skilled at working with children of all ages, and with families.
