Skin conditions

Our paediatric team will investigate problematic skin conditions to obtain a clear diagnosis and recommend treatment that suits your unique child. Our integrated approach enables your child to have complementary and nutitional advice in addition to medical consultations.

You may first visit a General Paediatrician - Dr Stan Rom and Dr Andy Raffles both have many years experience. If allergy is an issue, you may be referred to Dr Adam Fox, our Paediatric Allergist.

Diagnosis begins with the meeting between doctor and child, and your own observations will be important - we will work closely with you. Your doctor will request the appropriate tests.

Medical treatment is often helpful, e.g. in treating infection. Some problems may be connected to allergy; in this case addressing the allergy is the key issue. For chronic skin complaints, such as eczema, a long-term management programme is important, and where possible we recommend minimising the use of medication such as steroid cream.

Lifestyle measures may be useful, particularly if something in your child's environment is causing or exacerbating the problem. Our family therapist is on hand to help you make the appropriate changes.

Complementary therapies are frequently used in combination with medical care at Viveka. Some children respond to gentle homeopathic remedies and homeopaths at Viveka enjoy treating skin disorders.

Nutritional therapy can include personalised as well as family advice to reduce any negative effect that certain foods may have on the skin. Looking at your child's eating pattern and using practical measures may be very useful. Our nutritionists are expert in supporting children to avoid triggers for allergy, and to reduce foods that increase skin oils and acne.

Emotional support may be a positive element for your child and family. Our 'Emo team' spans the disciplines of child psychology and psychotherapy, as well as hypnotherapy, NLP and life coaching. For some families, living with a skin condition adds emotional stress to family life. And for some children, a skin problem may be a signal of underlying emotions that need to be aired and addressed. Our therapists will help with this.
