Pre-conception health check | Viveka

Pre-conception health check

One of the qualities that sets Viveka apart is our focus on health before conception. We've discovered that supporting women and couples before pregnancy has many physical and emotional benefits, both for parents and for their babies.

Most women who come to Viveka become pregnant naturally. We believe the integration of medical attention with advice on nutrition, vitamins and lifestyle, for both partners, contributes to a successful pregnancy. We enjoy continuing this support through pregnancy and beyond.

Your gynaecologist will review your personal, family and lifestyle history, examine you and discuss any tests that may be useful. You'll also have an opportunity to talk about additional support on offer at Viveka. Any issues will be highlighted as we work together to improve your pre-conception health. We encourage you to share your thoughts, dreams and worries with us.

Tests for women include a cervical smear, infection screen and blood count, with further investigations recommended according to your needs. An ultrasound scan is usually a central aspect of personal assesment.

A health check for men includes a personal, family and lifestyle history. You may also opt for an infection screen, blood count and (although this is less common as a general screen) a hormone profile and a sperm count.

Specialist tests are recommended according to your personal and family profile and any symptoms you have. Some couples choose screening for inherited genetic conditions.

You will both be offered a nutritional assessment and practical lifestyle advice. The nutritionist may suggest simple tests to assess where supplements or dietary changes may be useful, for instance to raise your libido, boost sperm count or regulate the menstrual cycle.

Many couples find that lifestyle measures make a huge difference. You may want to have life coaching or fitness advice to review balance in your life.

If emotional issues affect either of you or your relationship, sensitive support is available from the therapists in our 'Emo' team. Our team has helped hundreds of couples before conception, following miscarriage, during fertility treatment, and through pregnancy. Your consultant doctor will help you to choose the most appropriate person for you.

Complementary therapy is used for a huge range of issues, including stress reduction and hormone balance. Your doctor can help you decide if complementary care might be useful for either of you, and, if so, will help to match you with a suitable therapist at Viveka.
