Diabetes

Diabetes is a growing problem in the UK, with an increased number of people developing Type 2 diabetes in adulthood. Detecting early warning signs can be the key to preventing a future problem; while knowing how to manage your diet and lifestyle to reduce your risk of diabetes is important. If you are already affected, personal assessments at regular intervals will ensure you will be given the right medication and advice.

Symptoms of Diabetes & Diagnosis of risk or early warning signs

Diabetes Type 2 can have a gradual onset. Common symptoms of diabetes include;

  • Blurred vision
  • Frequent urination
  • Excessive thirst
  • Dry mouth
  • Leg pain
  • Itching skin
  • Unusually long time for cuts and sores to heal

On their own, these symptoms may have other causes. Your GP can give you an accurate diagnosis.

Your GP can also assess your risk for developing diabetes, including early warning signs. If you are at high risk but have not yet developed diabetes, lifestyle and nutritional measures may help you to reduce your risk. You may come to Viveka following a consultation with a GP from another practice, or you are welcome to visit our own GP, Dr Laila Kaikavoosi for your personal assessment or for ongoing monitoring and care.

Diabetes treatment

If you have Type 2 Diabetes (also known as late onset diabetes or non-insulin dependent diabetes), your need for medication will be determined by your personal symptoms and other factors including your weight, your diet and any concurrent medical problems. Type 2 Diabetes can often be effectively managed through attention to diet - nutritionists at Viveka have many years experience supporting people with diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes, also known as Insulin-dependent Diabetes, requires regular insulin injections. The modern kits for administering insulin are discrete and easy to use. Your doctor will monitor your symptoms and your dosage requirement.
