Pain and Injury Treatment
In pain? Your GP will give you a thorough examination to identify or exclude any underlying medical problem so that your treatment can be effective. Additional diagnosis and support may be recommended from a pain specialist, particularly if your pain is linked to posture or a previous injury.
Assessment and diagnosis
An initial consultation with GP Dr Kaikavoosi will help to clarify the causes of your pain, and consider ways to reduce discomfort. Occasionally referral to an external specialist, such as an orthopaedic consultant or neurologist, may be appropriate.
Headaches may be linked to posture, but may also reflect underlying high blood pressure, fluctuations in blood sugar (because of imbalance in your diet, or long periods without eating), stress and anxiety, or eye strain (and the need for correctly prescribed glasses). Rarely, there is an underlying problem and we may make a referral for an MRI scan.
Abdominal, stomach and bowel pain may be linked to eating habits, and could reflect underlying IBS (irritable bowel syndrome – click here). Your GP or nutritionist at Viveka can give you a personal assessment and help you consider whether what you eat is causing bloating or a build up of wind; test for fungal infection in your gut; screen for bacterial infection; and consider IBS. Colonoscopy is occasionally recommended to assist diagnosis, and ultrasound scanning is available on site.
Treating pain
Medication may include pain relief, such as NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs); and/or medication directed to the treatment of any underlying issue.
If your pain is related to digestion, please visit our digestion page.
Muscular or skeletal pain frequently responds well to changes in posture, including the way you sit and stand, and the quality of your mattress at home; and to a regular exercise plan or strength building regime. Your doctor will advise you on levels and methods of exercise that suit you, depending on the underlying cause of your pain.
Many people coming to Viveka turn to an osteopath for pain relief. Treatment can be gentle yet work at a deep level to realign the spine and correct imbalance, helping to improve posture and to boost healing following injury (even if an injury is very old). Our team of osteopaths includes a sports injury specialist.
