Janet Balaskas

Birth educator and activist, Janet Balaskas is a pioneer. She coined the phrase Active Birth in the late 1970s and has been writing, teaching and lecturing about it ever since. Janet has been working with Yehudi Gordon for 30 years and she helped to revolutionise birth practice in the UK and many other countries.

Janet is the founder and director of the Active Birth Centre and pioneered its pregnancy, birth and parenting programme, which has been an inspiration worldwide. She is the author of several ground breaking books and runs classes for women and couples, before and after birth.

Role:

Guide for women and couples in Active Birth and newborn baby care; and pregnancy yoga teacher.

Qualifications:

MA from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa; National Childbirth Trust birth educator; currently training with Spectrum in humanistic psychotherapy.

Core belief/passion:

I am passionate about working with pregnant women and their partners through the amazing transition into parenting and forming families. My aim is to inspire them to fulfil their potential for health and happiness through this important phase of life, to manage its challenges well and to make the most of its joys and blessings.

I like:

Yoga, nature, inspiring and motivating people, creative freedom and to feel at peace.

I don't like:

The colour yellow and any lack of integrity.
