Cervix

Cervical health is one of the key areas of concern for women. If you have any pain, or abnormal discharge or patterns of bleeding we recommend a personal examination. We offer cervical smears,  colposcopy, and sensitive surgical treatment if this is needed, as well as HPV tests and vaccination.

The first step is to visit your gynaecologist or GP. We offer cervical smears (also called pap smears) to check the cervix for early signs of pre-cancerous cell changes(called dysplasia or CIN). The smear test is not parinful.

Having a cervical smear regularly is vitally important, as early detection of cell changes allows treatment to begin and greatly reduce the likelihood of cervical cancer. Usually a smear every 3 years is recommended; but if you have had previous abnormal smear results we may suggest annual screening.

Diagnostic tools to check for cell changes in the cervix include:

  • regular cervical smears
  • tests to check for strains of HPV (human papilloma virus) known to be linked with cervical cell changes
  • colposcopy and biopsy to provide an accurate diagnosis when a smear reveals abnormal cell changes
  • the cervix may also be checked for Chlamydia and other STDs (sexually transmitted diseases)

Medical treatment includes HPV vaccination for girls to prevent cervical cancer. We also prescribe medication to treat infections to reduce discharge and discomfort.

Surgery may include colposcopy and diathermy heat excision of the abnormal cells (also called LLETZ). Diathermy may also reduce excessive discharge.

Complementary therapies can be useful to boost immunity to the HPV virus; and for support during or after medical treatment.

Lifestyle measures can help to boost immunity and support healthy cell growth. Our nutritionists are highly experienced in giving personalised advice about eating well and effective vitamin and mineral supplementation.

Emotional support is often welcomed by women following an unexpected diagnosis, or after treatment. The therapists on our 'Emo' team offer sensitive counselling.
