Contraception advice including IUD fitting | Gynaecologist in London | Viveka

Contraception

For advice on the best form of contraception for you, or to fit or replace an IUD (intra-uterine device), coil or Mirena, we recommend an appointment with a gynaecologist or one of our GPs.

Your doctor is here to give you impartial and confidential advice on contraception. We are here for women of all ages.

If you would like an IUD inserted, replaced or removed, we carry this out in the ultrasound department so that we can fully assess your uterine cavity, and ensure that the device is fitted as well as possible. Most complaints or difficulties regarding the coil (IUD), such as discomfort or cramps, arise when a device is not fitted well. Using ultrasound allows us to visualise exactly how the coil is fitted. You may choose a copper IUD, which has no hormones; or your doctor may recommend a hormone device (such as Mirena) that delivers hormones to your uterus. This is often the preferred option if menstual pains or heavy bleeding are an issue.

If you have any other issues related to contraception, for instance you would like to discuss fertility issues , or you are facing sexual difficulties, or any kind of vaginal or pelvic pain, your doctor will advise you about this, and may refer you to another member of our team. You may be reassured to know that the team at Viveka includes many specialists, ranging from Fertility consultants to counsellors.
