IBS & digestion

Irritable bowel syndrome and digestive problems such as constipation and 'gut ache' can often be resolved with relative ease.

Hormones related to the menstrual cycle or menopausal transition have an affect on digestion and bowel function; just as stress hormones, like adrenalin, impact digestion. It's useful to have a gynaecology consultation as well as a nutritional review, and many women find a relaxation or stress-reduction programme can make a huge difference.

Your medical consultant will examine you and discuss tests.

Diagnostic tests that may be recommended include:

  • stool analysis
  • hormone test
  • screening for infection
  • liver function tests
  • allergy and food intolerance testing

Specific tests can be used to assess the possibility of 'leaky gut syndrome' - where tiny molecules of food are thought to pass out of the digestive tract and into the blood, triggering an immune response.

Further tests using gastroscopy and colonoscopy to visualise the stomach and colon may be useful.

Ultrasound scanning may be used to check your abdomen and your bowel wall. CDS (Clinical Diagnostic Services, based at Viveka) are experts at monitoring the bowel and its response to ovarian hormones. Further X-Ray, MRI or CT scan imaging is occasionally recommended.

IBS is typically a 'diagnosis of exclusion', i.e. no underlying physical condition is identified but symptoms persist.

Medical treatment options include antacid or constipation medication. If your bowel is inflamed (inflammatory bowel) specific medication may be prescribed.

Complementary therapies are often useful to improve digestion and reduce pain and bloating.

Nutritional guidance is highly recommended. Treatment may include supplements (vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids); and will help you ensure that your diet is nutritious even if you need to make significant changes to minimise intolerances and reduce discomfort.

Emotional support often helps - there is a proven link between thoughts, feelings and digestion (the gut is often referred to as the 'little brain'). Our 'Emo' team includes a family therapist, hypnotherapist, psychotherapist and life coach.

Lifestyle issues ranging from exercise to play and relaxation often affect digestion - our life coach is here to guide you if you would like advice and support as you make changes.
