Menopause
The natural transition through the menopause can sometimes bring unwanted effects; this may happen for years before periods stop.
If you're experiencing hot flushes, mood swings, insomnia, sweats, forgetfulnes, or vaginal dryness, pain with sex or heavy menstrual bleeding, a visit to one of our consultant gynaecologists is the place to start.
Our doctors work closely with nutritionists and complementary therapists, giving you a choice of ways to reduce your symptoms.
When you meet your gynaecologist she or he will help you understand what's happening.
You'll be given a 'Well Woman' screen. This reveals your personal profile, with screening tests selected according to your needs:
- tests could assess your uterus and ovaries, breasts, bones and hormones
- your liver and kidney function may be checked
- a cervical smear may provide useful information
- blood analysis, ultrasound scanning, mammograms and bone scans are available
- depending on your history further tests may be relevant
- many women also have a nutritional profile to check levels of vitamins, minerals and omega fatty acids
Medication may be useful.
- The most common choice is hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which we carefully prescribe to minimise side effects: we tend to use bio-identical hormones. You may also discuss the options for natural alternatives to HRT.
- Irregular bleeding may also respond to the Mirena IUS.
- Surgery is seldom needed but occasionally for diagnostic purposes the lining of the uterus is visualised using hysteroscopy, a minimally invasive surgical technique.
Complementary therapy is often very useful. Many women find that changes to nutrition and taking supplements relieves symptoms. Acupuncture, homeopathy, osteopathy and reflexology are also available. Your doctor is here to guide you.
Viveka's EMO (emotional support) team comprises a range of therapists skilled in giving women emotional support at this stage of life. The 'Emo' team may also help you make changes in your lifestyle, e.g. sticking to exercise commitments, altering your ‘work-life balance', introducing relaxation, and learning new ways to be positive and enjoy your life.
