Pregnancy
The way that we care for women in pregnancy is unique: you can come to us for obstetric care, ultrasound scanning and antenatal classes as well as nutritional advice, acupuncture, homeopathy, counselling and more. You may also choose our GP as your guide through pregnancy and beyond. The range of specialties here ensures you can find what you need as your pregnancy progresses.
We offer medical and complementary care through pregnancy and we'll help you as you prepare for birth - with antenatal classes and groups for women and couples. And we like to provide continuity, so postnatal support is just as comprehensive.
We often care for women whose own mothers came to us when they were pregnant - this is one of the most gratifying rewards for the pregnancy specialists at Viveka.
You may begin by visiting our GP , or one of our gynaecologists. If you have received fertility support here at Viveka, you may wish to stay under the care of our specialist fertility doctor, consultant gynaecologist and obstetrician Dr Talha Shawaf.
You may also choose to visit one or more complementary therapists while you remain under the care of a medical team outside Viveka.
At Viveka our focus is on families, and we believe that caring for mum and dad during pregnancy is important for them and for their babies. We also support parents to help them bond with their babies before birth. Many women come to us for this level of support - some know about it because they already see doctors at Viveka, but many come even though they do not consult our medical team.
Antenatal Care
Antenatal care at Viveka includes a range of support. Choose what appeals to you:
- GP care for you during pregnancy.
- Check ups from a Consultant Gynaecologist
- Ultrasound scanning. CDS sonographers at Viveka offer 3D and 4D scans, and you can request a video of your baby in the womb.
- Screening for Down's syndrome: we have an enviable record for detecting affected babies using a risk-free non-invasive combination of blood tests at 10-12 weeks and a nuchal ultrasound scan at 12-13 weeks. Fewer than 5% of women require amniocentesis.
- Pregnancy symptoms: Pelvic pain or other pains will be investigated thoroughly. We're also here to help if you have nausea or morning sickness. Your GP or a gynaecologist will advise you if you have any worrying symptoms, or if you have complications and need specialist advice.
- If you have a miscarriage history ultrasound scans and blood checks help to establish your need for additional support or further treatment; and we can offer counselling or other emotional support.
- Lifestyle advice covers issues including stress reduction, yoga and exercise and relaxation.
- Advice on what to eat in pregnancy For nutrition advice, our team is led by Marilyn Glenville, the UK's most well-known expert on advising women in pregnancy.
- Birth preparation involves preparing yourself in body and in mind. We offer Gowri Motha's Gentle Birth Method, Janet Balaskas runs her Active Birth Weekend and other preparation classes here, including self-hynposis; and we host the Babiesknow programme for expectant parents.
- Emotional support from expert therapists helps couples prepare for parenthood, address relationship issues and bond with their baby. It is invaluable if you need support for depression, anxiety or stress - adressing stress during pregnancy benefits your baby, and greatly reduces the risk of postnatal depression after birth.
