Uterus
There are many changes in the uterus through a woman's life, and sometimes issues arise that give discomfort, bleeding or other symptoms. Common problems include pelvic pain, fibroids, endometriosis, adhesions, infection and prolapse.
Using gynaecology and ultrasound scanning as our foundation, we'll be able to form a detailed picture of your uterine health, any problems that need attention, and the treatment that's right for you. At Viveka, gynaecology is supported by a range of complementary therapies that are popular with women alongside medical treatment.
You begin by meeting your gynaecologist to discuss your symptoms and to be gently examined.
Ultrasound scanning allows close visualisation of your pelvis and uterus. CDS sonographers are world leaders in advanced 3D and 4D pelvic scanning. To accurately outline the cavity of your uterus you may be offered an additional ultrasound test called HSS where fluid is instilled into your uterus in the ultrasound room. Sometimes MRI scans are needed to clarify ultrasound images.
Infection screening, blood hormone analysis and anaemia tests are also offered, when they are needed.
Hysteroscopy is a surgical technique for diagnosis allowing a detailed visualisation of the internal cavity of the uterus. Some abnormalities can be corrected during the procedure.
Medical treatment includes pain relief, hormones and the Mirena IUS to relieve symptoms.
Surgery is occasionally beneficial. We have a preference for minimally invasive techniques and this approach usually avoids major operations such as hysterectomy. We may recommend procedures such as endometrial ablation (see our January 2009 newsletter) or embolisation of fibroids, or laparoscopic removal of endometriosis. Your gynaecologist will discuss the options with you and we offer complementary therapy to aid recovery after surgery.
Lifestyle adjustments may help you to feel positive and energised. Your hormones reflect what's happening in the rest of your body and mind, and your uterus responds to levels of oestrogen and progesterone hormones. If you would like help with identifying potential changes or with motivation and maintaining positive habits, you may visit one of our life coaches or a member of the 'Emo' (emotional support) team. The team includes a family therapist, hypnotherapist and psychotherapist.
Complementary therapy often plays an important part in treatment. Many of the therapies available at Viveka can help to regulate hormones and reduce problems from pain, fibroids and endometriosis. Our acupuncturists, homeopaths, osteopaths and nutritionists are very experinced and skilled at treating women and they often complement medical treatment. Your specialist will advise you.
